Buy or not to buy "programa.com" That is the question

Domain shopping opportunities in the summer months

Creo personalmente que hay objetivos mucho más importantes que tal vez convertirían los .es en un TLD serio y no el country TLD bananero que son en la actualidad. Entre los problemas a resolver enumero:
- El ridículo de no poder renovar por más de 1 año los dominios, y la respuesta de que “ antes de finales de año eso estará resuelto ”, que llevamos oyendo al menos 2 años. Eso no sólo es incómodo, genera además problemas para la gestión de carteras grandes, pero a Red.es le da igual. No somos clientes, somos borregos y ellos los latifundistas.
- El absurdo del sistema de transferencia de dominios rellenando y enviando DNI y pdfs que nos hacen pensar que estamos en la edad de piedra, mientras que el resto de gestores de dominios funcionan de una manera más rápida, actual, automática y demostrando que no se pierde ningún tipo de seguridad por funcionar así.
- El bochornoso sistema de resolución de conflictos , con casos alarmantes como lupa.es, sigla.es y otros que generan alarma social, indefensión y preocupación entre los usuarios y los domainers. Panelistas que llegan a ser juez y parte y resoluciones simplemente ridículas.
- La poca inteligencia de los gestores de Esnic, que dan la espalda al mercado secundario , queriendo mirar a otro lado ante la evidencia de que tal vez 200.000 o 250.000 dominios están en manos de domainers profesionales, siendo este su primer colectivo de “clientes”; sí, somos clientes y no se lo meten en la cabeza.
- Los registradores , intermediarios imprescindibles para el buen funcionamiento de cualquier tipo de dominio, se quejan de que casi tienen que “ir a pilas” a ingresar a EsNic a mano los pagos en oficinas de un único banco. Parece que estuviéramos 10 años atrás.

- El bochorno de las apariciones públicas a las que he podido asistir del responsable de Red.es, Jesús García Tello , que ha participado en las ponencias más lamentables que he visto jamás a un personaje público demostrando una preocupante falta de información en el primer Congreso de Forum Dominios en 2007. En el segundo en Cornella en 2008, demostrando poca cintura al venir acompañado del abogado de Red.es para “ quitarse el marrón ” de las preguntas legales de encima, en un hecho insólito y hasta poco amistoso en un acto público en el que el invitado se presenta con su abogado para defenderse y responder a las preguntas críticas alegando “falta de información” (cómo puede el máximo responsable alegar falta de información en un evento sobre su sector ¿?). Por cierto, dejo aparte en esta quema al pobre abogado, por ser un” mandao”, pero presa de los nervios ante las incisivas preguntas no sólo no lograba hacerse entender con claridad, sino que llegaba a utilizar argumentos inciertos, inexactos ,y tergiversados como acertadamente le hizo ver Carlos Blanco y algún otro asistente en el evento.
Nunca había asistido a un ridículo público como este. Sería bueno que Alberto Dominguez , de Dinamon , subiera esos vídeos a YouTube como se hizo con la primera edición. Estoy seguro que mucha gente los querría ver.
Por todas estas razones, yo, que en la actualidad tengo una cartera de dominios Premium, que soy inversor y que he llegado a pagar hasta 50.000€ por algún dominio .com, no valoro en la misma proporción los .es, no invertiré en ningún caso en la compra de .es cantidades significativas ante las dudas e inseguridad que me crea el trato y actitud de Esnic y no ampliaré el % de este TLD , que insisto, me gusta, dentro de mi cartera de dominios. Si alguna vez eso cambia, de la misma manera lo diré y me alegraré de ello.
Esnic lleva casi 3 años conociendo estos problemas, sin solucionarlos. Para ellos los domainers, pese a necesitarlos ni son un interlocutor válido, ni existen, ni requieren para ellos ningún tipo de atención. Y mientras celebrando el dominio 1.000.000 … mirándose al espejo y no reconociendo que 3 años después no se avanza y esto es un desastre total en el que curiosamente no aparece una cabeza medianamente capacitada para poner las cosas en orden.
Feliz 1.000.000 de dominios. Llegaremos al millón y medio y posiblemente todo será igual de caótico.

Se disparan los impagos. Sí, también en el sector tecnológico
Repasando balances de alguna de nuestras empresas estamos detectando una preocupante tendencia desde el pasado mes de Diciembre 2007, mientras que durante el 2006 y 2007 los impagos que sufríamos eran algo absolutamente residual, en los últimos meses se han disparado notablemente.
Esto, que muchos esperaban- esperábamos que no afectara de lleno al sector tecnológico si lo está afectando : personalmente vemos como compañías internacionales tienen dificultades para cumplir sus acuerdos económicos con nosotros, o como por ejemplo de 3 nombres de dominio que hemos vendido en los últimos meses a través de SEDO , los 2 que han sido cifras importantes han terminado en impago.
Ayer leía en Expansión un interesante artículo bajo el título “ El récord de quiebras en el comercio avanza una grave extensión de la crisis .” Veo que han crecido los impagos un 85% en el último periodo en España.
No voy a volver a tocar el tema de la crisis económica, para los interesados sólo recomendarles unos interesantes post con muchos comentarios interesantes en el blog de Carlos Blanco , pero si quiero hacer una pequeña reflexión sobre los efectos de estas nuevas situaciones en el sector tecnológico.
Los que nos dedicamos a internet llevamos meses oyendo que el sector “sufrirá menos” que otros y que podemos estar más o menos tranquilos. Vamos, que esto no va a ser lo de 1993; momentos en los que todos, en mayor o menor medida pasamos momentos complicados. ¡Ojo, confiarse en eso puede ser fatal!
Me parece que si nos quedamos quietos, inmóviles, regodeándonos en reflexiones de este estilo, pensando que “ vienen malas pero que podría ser peor, como posiblemente lo sea en otros sectores ”, hacemos un flaco favor a nuestras compañías y tenemos que empezar a movernos y adaptarnos a una nueva realidad que irá a peor.
Desde hace algunos meses, viendo el precio de dólar, el desplome publicitario de Adsense, CPM´s que caen, acuerdos que se renegociarán en septiembre, las dificultades de venta de agencias dedicadas a publicidad de branding y el cambio de ciclo de la publicidad hacia estrategias de venta pura y dura y preparándonos para lo que nos viene encima en meses que van a ser duros como septiembre y enero-febrero, hemos puesto en marcha un pequeño plan de recortes y contención de gasto en el día a día de nuestras empresas y también en nuestras inversiones. Es posible que algunas de estas medidas lleguen algo temprano, pero creo que cielo hoy sólo está gris, pero al fondo se ve negro negro negro … , y creo que todos debemos prepararnos para lo que se nos viene encima. Si, también en este sector y digan lo que digan las cifras macro sectoriales del analista de turno.

Inversion.tv
Me avisa hace unos días Diego, uno de mis colaboradores, de la subasta en el foro demene.com de un nombre de dominio que nos podía interesar: inversion.tv
Estamos dándole vueltas a realizar a medio plazo varios blogs de temas de inversión, economía y finanzas y me ha parecido interesante, así que lo hemos comprado, y además creo que en buen precio, unos 300€.
Los dominios .tv son como una inagotable espiral de subidas y bajadas de valor. La verdad es que hemos tenido experiencias buenas y malas con ellos. Apuesto por ellos para todo lo que sea crear contenido audiovisual especialmente.
En la actualidad no tenemos muchos, pero si que tenemos algunos buenos dominios tv, como foros.tv , fotos.tv , correo.tv , servers.tv y trucos.tv . De todos esos dominios sólo tenemos en uso, desde hace algún tiempo foros.tv. El resto de estos dominios estamos estudiando opciones y alianzas para poder ponerlos en uso. Nosotros además de los mencionados tuvimos otro .tv que fue vendido en 4500€ hace ya algunos meses.
Pienso que hay aun buenas oportunidades de comprar en este TLD a buen precio. De hecho creo que proporción popularidad vs precio los .tv son el TLD donde adquirir a mejor precio palabras genéricas en español en estos momentos, tras un par de años de subida imparable de valor de los dominios .info.
Para que la cotización de los .tv suba y se estabilice al alza se han tenido que superar numerosas dificultades. La primera con el hoax de que la posible desaparición de la isla de Tuvalu, de la que provienen los .tv, podría hacer perder sentido este TLD y hacer desaparecer los .tv, la segunda y más grave, la espantosa liberación hace poco más de 14 meses de los dominios premium tv que ha llevado a cabo Enom, en la que los precios de “alquiler anual” son en muchas ocasiones ridículos con cifras que pueden llegar hasta los 10.000US$/año por algunos dominios premium. Esas dificultades han hecho que este tipo de nombre de dominio, pese a ser valorado, no rompa más al alza al no estar suficientemente desarrollados, de hecho pocas veces vemos un .tv con una fuerte inversión en desarrollo detrás, y mucho menos en español.

Evolución del mercado publicitario online en periodos de incertidumbre
En los últimos meses la publicidad en internet está evolucionando de manera dispar y eso afecta directamente a sectores como la afiliación o el parking de dominios.
Nunca he creído en los parkings de dominios, de hecho los considero como un “mal necesario” y siempre me han parecido no aportar valor alguno “ pan para hoy y hambre para mañana ”. Además soy especialmente crítico con lo negativo que son los sistemas de parking de dominios para el posicionamiento web, si luego desarrollas o quieres desarrollar un dominio tendrás que pasar un filtro de Google de meses y meses para posicionarte en muchas ocasiones.
Aun así, como iba diciendo los parkings son un mal necesario cuando se tienen como nosotros más de 1.000 dominios. Algo hay que hacer con ellos.
Desde hace algunos años trabajamos con SEDO , no sólo la compra e inversión en nuestra cartera propia de dominios sino su sistema de parking. Creo que tecnológicamente la optimización, calidad del contenido y sistema actual de parking de dominios es muy mejorable , de hecho me sorprende que una empresa como SEDO no esté desarrollando ya lo que deberían ser sistemas de parking 2.0, más proactivos, dinámicos, multimedia, autogenerando contenidos por parte del usuario y aportando algo de valor, no simplemente siendo un soporte publicitario estéril.
Aun así nuestra experiencia este último año ha sido muy positiva, creciendo hasta un 100% los ingresos provenientes de parking de dominios dentro de SEDO.
Creo que en primer lugar se debe a ciertas mejoras de SEDO ya una mejor optimización por nuestra parte, pero también creo que la crisis ha ayudado en determinados nichos de mercado. Podría ser una paradoja, pero ciertos sectores, ante una situación económica adversa tienen la imperiosa necesidad de vender, por lo que se vuelcan en la publicidad en internet para captar clientes . Especialmente comercios, bancos (captar activos), empresas de inversión, etc, que tienen que hacer que la publicidad rente y se justifique dentro de sus compañías.
Para muestra un botón. Hace algunos años me interesé mucho en las energías renovables ; muy especialmente en Solar Fotovoltaica, invirtiendo en parques solares en Extremadura y Navarra. Hace 2-3 años había enormes e insalvables listas de espera para realizar este tipo de inversiones, respaldadas por El Plan de Energías Renovables en España (PER) 2005-2010. Hoy en día, muchas de esas empresas, especialmente las de gran tamaño, tienen problemas para comercializar y captar inversión con la crisis; el mercado se ha revertido, hay miedo de invertir y ese dinero está escondido.
Curiosamente hace algo menos de 1 año compramos el dominio renovables.es y lo tenemos en nuestro parking de dominios. La evolución de los ratios de clics creo que es muy significativa e ilustra un movimiento sectorial.
En Diciembre del 2007 , buen mes para el mercado publicitario, y con un escenario más positivo que el actual, este era el estado de nuestro dominio renovables.es:
Como podéis ver una mínima reversión de 0.24€, con 4 clics, lo que nos da un CPC de 0,06€ (en la captura EPC).

Sin embargo, con el empeoramiento de la situación económica, ha ido mejorando radicalmente ante la necesidad real de captar clientes vía web por parte de estas compañías, el pasado mes de Junio esta es la evolución:

Como veis, un dominio aparcado y sin uso que nos generaba 0,24€/mes, ahora con la nueva situación económica y necesidad de venta del anunciante está llegando a generar hasta 15€ mensuales, un crecimiento escalonado brutal que nos lleva a un CPC de 0,94€ (desde 0,06€).
Con esa reversión y estando por medio Google Adsense y SEDO, como intermediarios necesarios, podríamos llegar a la conclusión de que tal vez los anunciantes estén pagando el clic en torno a 2,5-3€ (muy buen precio para palabras en español), cuando antes no apostaban más de 0,3-0,6€ de margen por clics. Hace meses tenían campañas de test, branding, y mantenimiento y ahora, por la situación offline usan internet de forma más agresiva buscando clientes potenciales y en definitiva buscando ventas, lo que les hace ser mucho más agresivos para adelantar a su competencia.
Creo que este pequeño ejemplo puede ilustrar la teoría que muchos profesionales del sector mantienen en torno a que la publicidad en Internet aguanta en números globales, pero en parte está migrando dentro del sector desde el branding y el CPM hacia acciones especiales, de publicidad contextual, afiliación o email marketing destinadas a lograr una suscripción o venta.

Algunos días tengo algo de suerte
La verdad es que hay días -los menos eh!- en los que parece que uno tiene la fortuna de cara.
Leo hace días, el pasado 2 de Julio, en Loogic sobre un servicio, que me resulta muy interesante llamado atasco.org . Se trata de una aplicación para móvil para saber si hay atascos en las distintas comunidades de España antes de salir de viaje. El servicio en si no lo he probado, y realmente no sé si está bien desarrollado o no, pero me pareció una gran idea.

Hay días que las casualidades llaman a tu puerta, y yo, que creo poco en las casualidades, pienso que puede haber una oportunidad de negocio y de trabajo tras ellas.
Resulta que entre los miles de nombres de dominios que nos parecen interesantes y monitorizamos habitualmente para capturar y hacer cartera, tenemos a atascos.com y el mismo día en el que leo el post de Loogic, casualidades de la vida, me llega un email que hemos capturado sin comerlo ni beberlo www.atascos.com por 79US$.
El precio es un chollo, que todo esto ocurra el mismo día que leemos lo de www.atasco.org una gran casualidad y una casualidad aun mayor que esto suceda sin saber que iba a caducar -raro, ya que solemos monitorizarlo y no estaba en nuestras previsiones- y más raro aun que nadie más estuviera con ese backorder preparado por lo que nos ha sido adjudicado directamente sin entrar, como sería sin lugar a dudas habitual, en una subasta privada, donde a buen seguro ese nombre de dominio podría haberse ido por encima de los 3000€.
