The dethroned sms
I leave you with the latest article published in El Mercantil Valenciano, on June 5. If you prefer, you can shamelessly grandstand full PDF format by clicking here

Over the past two years, the relevance of social networks have reached in the life of the Internet was unexpected by almost all sectors. Not at all telephony operators could imagine that in a short time, Twitter was going to unseat the text messages when you consider that over 2008 short messages accounted for 12% of the total income of operators and that in such only two years that percentage has fallen to 8%. SMS (short message mobile) responded to one, until now, unknown user need to be continuously connected and localized, but in reality was the gestation of what is now has become an effective means of mass information. Now it is the short message with 140 characters who lead and flood the network.
Today with only tweet or update your status on the facebook profile you want to disseminate information reaches thousands of people in real time. Possibly the sms is already dethroned. Arguably, the leading position it has earned Twitter, a fact that mobile operators will not see as something positive for their coffers. And is that the data do not lie, and with only five years, and with 200millones Twittercuenta users and adds over 450,000 new ones every day. The figures also continue its climb to a summit that at first seemed elusive. In a year it has gone from 50 million to send "tweets" per day to 140 million. Considering that Michael Jackson 2009la death was a total of 456 instant messages per second this figure was completely obsolete during entry in 2011 in Japan with 6939 tweets per second. But I dare say that Twitter really took off in 2009 during the riots in Iran, when he challenged censorship and allowed its users to have from the inside what was happening in the country and getting there was a turning point in the world of communication.
Currently, details on the conflict in Egypt, Libya and news about Gaddafi and other issues of great relevance worldwide spread like wildfire through the network in real time and more widely than any other medium. But not only spread the news, social networks are much more impact and ability to reach more relevant than other information channels, as there is the possibility to interact directly with the issuer of the news. Users have the option to express their opinions on current and estates closer to unattainable until now. What until recently were words understood techniques are now the everyday media use, like Twitter, hashtags or trending topics. Perhaps it will be no nostalgia or simply a matter of mere necessity, but arguably the sms has been dethroned.

I very much agree with your column, but with nuances. It is indisputable that SMS between users, especially among young people is declining rapidly, and applications like twitter WhatsApp and the like.
But SMS is still a great value for the company-client communications. SMS is so short as to not waste time reading it, and do, and as well have cost to ship is unusual indiscriminate (except for the operators themselves, of course).
Just a few days ago we talked about it on our blog and if new applications will end up with SMS .
In any case, operators are running out of the bargain of the SMS, are now beginning to see the gravy train of data, and we put a card to all devices, iphone and so on.
