Returning to the garage
Last night I read a post by Francisco Carrero, missed on the draft garage ... what those times! And wanted to share a few thoughts about it ...
Those who like me, have more than 10 years on the internet we remember well, and at least I nostalgically of the garage project.
The concept, imported from USA as always we came to pass that talent, the idea (increasingly obsolete) and the execution could do that from a small village in Arkansas, 2 amiguetes in their spare time after school, do something important on the Internet and build a project that could reach the world. It was as real as utopian, on the Internet "you can be the Corte Ingles"
In Spain there was not really so many projects, but if in USA. Many of the companies on the Internet concerning the end of the 90 were born literally in a garage. People like Bill Gates or Steve Jobs started well, literally.
Years ago that the romantic concept of the garage has fallen into disgrace. I guess that was predictable and that is equal to healthy, but these "garage projects" have not disappeared, have been transformed.
What in the year of'98 was an idea, a computer, a small footprint and killed a few hours of programming, creativity, probaturas and work with excitement, today is a power point or at most a pdf and a string of visits to Business Angels, Family Offices, Risk Capital and several events.
I do not want to prejudge or clear position, but if you do a little thinking out loud and hear your opinion:
Did not we spend time now to "find the money," literally, when 10 years ago, nor the previous generation was raised to conduct a Business Plan initially, but what they wanted was to start proving its concept, its execution (with its media, often rudimentary), and his ability?
At the end of the 90 kids were young, often pre-university students who were putting up its project. Today, entrepreneurs rarely look younger than 24-25 years, almost always having finished or close to finish the race, that "must leave" to find life, but not before. With generational change we have not delayed the timming?. Would it be a total change; of concern to the necessity of yesteryear?. Those guys from the institute, under 20 years old, and they had created their project forward, no longer exist?
And finally, if the crisis closes the tap of money, what effect will these pdf and Powerpoint circulating like crazy table in table?. ¿Exacerbate the ingenuity that lack of liquidity?. That is to say, will come back to the garage?
Not if you come back to that point, but if you think that if it were, in some ways would have more charm.

I believe in the garage, working on having the product before selling it in the idea and the bearer of the idea, a person obsessed with his project, for me, everything else in SMOKE.
I think it is the result of two things:
-The maturity of the Internet as a source of wealth creation. With all the paraphernalia that entails marektiniana, ahead of the technology.
-The delay in reaching the world of new young adult. It is difficult to find a young man with maturity in 20 years.
It gives the impression that without a Porrón of money you can not start anything, it is the opposite, for most software projects is not needed almost nothing except their own investment in production of those partners who are within the project.
Do it! is all that is needed. (must know how to do it, of course)
I also I wish to live in a time when the Business Plans were not so important, where you could focus solely on technology to develop and presentations, events, meetings with investors, and so on. you do not remove half his life.
However, it is always read a lot of projects garage, but neither do I see that so many have, and the situation is not and has been moved to Spain:
* Projects such as Google, which many claim as a "garage", not so, since it could develop through under cover of a prestigious University (scholarships, technology, media, etc.).. It is true that Larry and Sergey had a brutal, but without the support of the university, allowing them to focus on its technology and not look at what to eat, no one knows what would have finished the thing.
* In the U.S., investors get a lot of confidence that you have the support of your school, or a professor in particular. That allows you to have some certainty that if you're developing a good technology at the university, the money will get an easy stage. In Spain, not only does not work well, but it seems that everything that has to do with universities can not move closer to the companies.
* The American economy is more proclibe the venture, and is easier to find money for "fools" in which economies are so conservative as those in Europe. That allows enough money to lift the four F and survive in the early stages.
@ JOSEK, 100% agree with everything you say.
Neither Google was a project of garage (but eye, many hundreds if), nor is it so easy in Spain and in USA
Curiously alzado.org publishes an interview with an ecommerce project of the "garage", literally, Vinissimus:
http://www.alzado.org/articulo.php?id_art=759
Unfunded but remains a personal project of someone with knowledge of the medium. € 46mil of more than 1 million turnover in 2 years.
And now I think, what would have cost to order the development and integration to a consultant?, A manager would have survived without the knowledge of the environment?, Imports over the project or the entrepreneur?.
What I see in Spain is a kind of small oligarchy of the Internet whose members get exposure for their projects, appear on awards, etc ... I am not saying do not deserve that statement, but it provides them with much diffusion and thus the success of their projects.
The problem of enterprising garage is just get out of the garage and show the world your project.
I very much agree with Alvaro on the theme of the oligarchy from the Internet in Spain (¿oligarquinet?) And subscribe to each and every one of his words, not to serve as a critique for anyone. It is virtually impossible to obtain Help? BA or VC if you do not have a 'godfather'. Fortunately or unfortunately, this happens in almost all areas of life (goalkeeper Pepe Reina is good, but where is it would be if it were not because his father was who he was?).
We were born in a 'garage' ... currando hours we could when we went out it was our work as usual ... we called it crazy, we now 4 years, and if we had had to seek investment to get started I do not think we would have never started. A situation similar to the present, looking for investment, which we want to move the 'home office' (after a couple of years spent in the garage of the home office) to the outside ... and it seems to me that we continue building on our own or synergy and wit or will be not get foreign investment, despite having clear ideas.
Greetings!
Here one of 21 years and that has lasted more than 2 in this. But you're right, there are very few people, very little of my age to think about these things. Now that premium is the botellón and other things ...
A greeting!
@ Salva Portillo, that's fabulous Salva. It's the best age. Carry-year advantage to the other in the future.
There are many entrepreneurs in the age range you comment Alejandro, may not be the model we have in mind, but if there is one that many guys who are starting to install their scripts and itentar push their projects with minimal investment, and this is the why we do not think they come to appreciate.
Blogs specialized industry always tend to associate the magnitude of a project with the amount of € € invested and the name of the entrepreneur who sponsors it.
Perhaps Spain will miss at least one more support for web startups, particularly those in the garage.
Alejandro good! Very good post. Just one point. The institute is left with Spain in 17 years. From a technical (Type Informatica, telecom) with 20, and a top 5 with 22. So with 25 you can have muuuuucha experience, especially if you've begun work on fellow consultants.
I work as a consultant in practice in DMR and Amena with 19, and had incredible leaders with 25 senior technicians who were to mount a technical level of enterprises overwhelming.
In my last job with 22 years at IBM and was project manager and chief software architect who asked me for 30 years and accounts seemed viejísimo totally technically outdated. And it's very difficult to match the performance of those who programmed with passion recently emerged from the faculty and with one or two years' experience. I did not see in any of my work more difficult tasks that the practices of the university.
So I think that as your 24-25 years is an age suitable for launch, because not only has the freshness, but a great experience.
@ Salva Portillo
Your words certainly not make us any good. The topic you refer to merely feed the false idea that we are a generation of "useless" without values and without interest.
I recommend that you move you a bit of truth that is not so difficult to find people with your same concerns.
Salva good! I have devised projects doing botellón: D. For me the botellón is one of the best inventions ever created. Socialization outdoors: creativity assured.
Very interesting article. Here, an entrepreneur of 20 years, working time from home without any investment. My model is the initial funding to other projects. Although it is sometimes tempting the idea of receiving external funding, I think that unless it is really necessary, it should try to avoid, so that the project will have stable growth and is more easily self.
@ David Alonso
I can not deny that, in general, people only think of our age in good time and also so exaggerated ... I do not know where you live, but here in Valencia (Spain), you can go out Wednesday, Thursday, Friday or Saturday, and go Wherever you go you see people eat and ethyl that is passed, and so day after day, without thinking about the future ... Of course, I speak in general!
Gonzalo @
I agree, I too would like very much, but not every week several times! Everything in their just ...
A greeting!
I do not think they have disappeared projects garage, just in spain have been virtually nonexistent.
I pieced my first company in 22 years, when he was still at half of my college career (he was 6 years old). And we did it without any investment, only with our work means. The investments came after, but when we had fought fairly and with the real world.
I believe that this initial experience is the true entrepreneur, because you really have to look for life. Start with many zeros from the beginning not going to teach you how much is at stake.
